About Container Deposit Schemes

Container Deposit Schemes allow people to return their used containers to a collection point and exchange them for a 10c refund. By providing an incentive for recycling, these refund schemes are shown to reduce litter by up to a third - helping keep plastic out of our oceans.

South Australia was the very first state to introduce a Container Deposit Scheme, way back in 1977! Today every almost Australian State or Territory has a Container Deposit Scheme, thanks to ocean lovers who have campaigned for many years for action to stop plastic bottles polluting our oceans.

Tasmania and Victoria's container deposit schemes are expected to begin in late 2023.

Aluminium is a win. Glass and plastic are always in. Steel and paper are good to go. But milk and wine bottles are a no. - Containers For Change, WA

There are slight differences in which containers are eligible for a refund depending on which state you are in. However, in general you will find that most aluminium, glass, plastic, steel and liquid paperboard drink containers between 150ml and 3L are eligible for a refund.

These schemes target containers most commonly consumed and littered outside the home, so they will often exclude wine and milk containers - since they usually get recycled in household recycling.
