Enter in 50 words or less for your chance to win a framed artwork by renowned Australian marine artist Roger Swainston.
Roger is one of Australia’s most respected natural history artists. His work is grounded in science and built from decades of close observation of coral reefs, fish and marine ecosystems.
During the recent Ellison Reef resurvey, Roger spent four days on the reef diving and drawing underwater.
Working in warm 28°C waters, often for more than three hours per tank, he sketched species in place while navigating shifting tides and changing conditions.
This artwork comes directly from that time in the water.
It reflects what was observed on the reef during the resurvey, including coral structures, reef fish diversity and large, long-lived coral formations. Roger’s process brings these elements together into a single composition, documenting the reef as it exists today.
His illustrations are used in scientific publications and field guides, and are recognised internationally for their accuracy and detail.
This is not an imagined reef. It is a work built from time spent underwater, observing and recording a living ecosystem.
Ellison Reef is recovering, but like many reefs, it remains vulnerable to climate and human pressures. Work like this helps document and protect these fragile systems.
The framed print is 1820mm (Wide) x 665mm (High), valued at over $2,700 and is a rare opportunity to own a work connected to the Ellison Reef resurvey.
