From the rhythmic dance of a green sea turtle, the haunting song of a migrating humpback, to the grace and beauty of a weedy seadragon or a dusky sea snake.
Australia’s marine territory is one of the largest on Earth and home to species found nowhere else.
AMCS is dedicated to protecting the most important places in Australia’s ocean and on our coasts. AMCS advocates for a more ambitious, science-based fully protected network of marine sanctuaries in federal waters, priority state and territory waters, and protect important places from destructive development.
This year is very special. We have launched our Thriving Ocean Plan – an ambitious plan to safeguard Australia’s ocean, coasts and marine life. As we embark upon an ambitious Thriving Ocean Plan, we are reflecting on what the ocean means to us – and perhaps to you.
In Australia, the ocean isn’t just where we spend our summers—it’s the engine of our survival. Covering an area larger than our landmass, Australia’s marine jurisdiction is a vast, blue frontier that sustains our economy, our climate, and our very identity.
But our ocean is under threat.
Cumulative threats from development, climate change, commercial and recreational fishing, pollution and other pressures are putting Australia’s most ecologically and culturally valuable marine places at serious risk.
Protecting Australia’s most biologically important, culturally significant and beloved ocean and coastal areas is important for wildlife and habitats, and for us all to enjoy for generations to come.
Healthy marine life is central to our Australian lifestyle, our livelihoods, our coastal economies and our global reputation.
