Strong laws are the most powerful tools we have to safeguard Australia’s fragile ocean habitats, iconic wildlife and treasured places.
But our national nature law – the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) – is dangerously outdated.
It is allowing the destruction of our unique wildlife, reefs and seascapes.
The EPBC Act lacks proper enforcement, shuts the communities out of decisions, and allows industry giants to push through damaging projects with little scrutiny.
Right now, our oceans are crying out for urgent protection. From the mass bleaching of our great reefs from west to east and marine heatwaves in the south, to species such as the Maugean skate being on the brink of extinction, marine life is suffering.
The Albanese Government has promised to reintroduce reforms as a priority, after the Nature Positive Bills failed to pass in the last term of Government.
It’s time to demand strong, fair and modern laws that:
- Enforce National Environmental Standards that actually protect nature.
- Reject projects that fuel climate change and threaten our oceans.
- Fund real habitat restoration and species recovery to ensure its protection.
- Give communities and First Nations peoples a genuine voice in decisions.
- Close legal loopholes that put profits ahead of protection.
Marine life is being destroyed by weak nature laws. But stronger laws can protect what we love—and bring it back. Join the call for strong national nature laws, add your voice to our petition to demand urgent and comprehensive nature law reform.
Your signature will be delivered to Senator the Hon Murray Watt, Minister for the Environment and Water and used to help strengthen our campaign for strong nature laws.
