New WA Marine Park
A brand-new WA South Coast Marine Park has been created!
Significant protections have been provided for sea life within the new WA South Coast Marine Park. The network of marine sanctuary zones within the marine park will help to safeguard WA’s globally important marine life.
Until now, there has been no marine sanctuary protection along a 1,000km stretch of WA’s south coast, which features a large part of the Great Southern Reef – home to more unique species than the Great Barrier Reef.
Thank you to the 20,000 ocean-lovers who wrote to the WA Government calling for strong sanctuary protection for this special part of Australia. Our Save Our Marine Life alliance celebrates this win with you!
More than 30 years after it was first proposed, the South Coast Marine Park lays a strong foundation.
However, habitats critical to the health and survival of unique and endangered species such as Australian sea lions and southern right whales remain under-protected. We must continue to build a truly world class marine park network that fully protects our treasured marine life and our way of life.
