Skating On Thin Ice
Thousands of ocean lovers called for supermarkets to stop sponsoring the extinction of the Maugean skate.
AMCS’s Sharks Campaign Manager Dr Leonardo Guida delivered petitions with more than 7,000 signatures to the CEOs of Coles and Woolworths, urging the supermarket giants to stop selling Atlantic salmon farmed in Macquarie Harbour, Tasmania.
The companies are major buyers of farmed Atlantic salmon – the leading cause of decline of the Maugean skate. Dr Guida also addressed both companies’ annual general meetings, calling on their boards to stop backing the skate’s potential extinction.
At the Woolworths’ AGM, 34% of shareholders defied the board and voted to end the company’s contribution to the skate’s decline — a record global vote for a nature-based shareholder resolution in 2025.
Coles has quietly removed the “responsibly sourced” label from its own-brand salmon, which includes product from Macquarie Harbour.
Your support enables us to keep the pressure on in 2026 and give the Maugean skate a fighting chance.
