Destructive bottom trawling is an intensive fishing method that ploughs heavy gear across the seabed, catching everything in its path. These marine communities can take generations to recover.
Yet bottom trawling is still permitted in about 13 million hectares of our offshore Australian Marine Parks – that’s an area almost twice the size of Tasmania!
These are not remote or forgotten places. They include the significant waters in the Gulf of Carpentaria (NT), the biodiverse waters off Jervis Bay (NSW), and areas of the Coral Sea Marine Park (QLD).
This is a critical opportunity to increase marine sanctuary protections and ensure our Australian Marine Parks are truly protected from destructive bottom trawling.
