1% For Nature
1% is a drop in the ocean for the budget but a tidal wave of change for nature.
Australia’s breathtaking coastlines, ancient mangrove and kelp forests, sea grass meadows and vibrant coral reefs are home to some of the most diverse life on Earth.
But many of the species that depend on these places are in decline. Protection and recovery efforts remain drastically underfunded.
Without urgent action, more of Australia’s threatened species could be lost forever.
Less than 0.1% of the federal budget is currently directed to the protection and recovery of nature. It’s like trying to fight a bushfire with a single bucket of water – completely inadequate for the scale of the crisis.
Dedicating at least 1% of the federal budget to nature would be a game-changer. It would help protect threatened species, restore damaged ecosystems and accelerate the recovery of Australia’s ocean and coasts.
