Former Chief Executive Officer, from 2009-2024
Darren Kindleysides steered AMCS’ work from 2009 to 2024 on a variety of issues including marine protected area establishment, threatened species conservation, sustainable fisheries management and mitigating the environmental impacts of marine industries, coastal development and shipping.
Darren brought his in-depth experience, knowledge and expertise in marine conservation, having worked in this field for almost 20 years both in Australia and overseas. He has overseen the development and implementation of marine conservation programs, projects and campaigns in Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, the South Pacific and Europe, leading initiatives to safeguard Coral Sea reefs, Antarctic whales, Pacific turtles, Atlantic seabirds and North Sea cod.
Under Darren’s leadership, AMCS played a leading and pivotal role in Australia establishing the largest national network of marine reserves in the world; in driving Australia’s sustainable seafood revolution; in securing enduring protection for marine life like sharks and whales; in transforming how plastic is viewed from product to pollutant; in stopping short-sighted coastal and offshore developments, and in achieving landmark reforms to safeguard the Great Barrier Reef from development and pollution.
