Open Letter: Intergenerational Equity demands greater investment in the protection and care of nature

June 3, 2026

Recent analysis by the Biodiversity Council found that only 0.06% of the federal budget will go to on-ground nature conservation programs this year – that is $1 out of every $1,667 in the federal budget.

This amount is less than what was spent last year and will almost halve in future years, and is inadequate to halt nature loss and leave a healthy environment for future generations.

Scientists have calculated that we need 1% of the budget spent on conservation to leave a healthy environment for future generations

The Australian Marine Conservation Society joined more than 400 scientists, conservation groups, and young people in signing a joint letter to the Prime Minister, Treasurer, Minister for the Environment and Water, and the Minister for Finance.
