Offshore Wind Report

May 1, 2025

Experts from the Australian Centre for Offshore Wind Energy (ACOWE) and the Biodiversity Council (BC) in collaboration with The Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) have released a new report to provide recommendations for smarter planning for offshore wind development.

Climate change caused by burning fossil fuels is the biggest threat facing Australia’s oceans. As part of our commitment to combat climate change, we support the responsible transition to 100% renewable energy to protect the life, livelihoods and cultural value our oceans sustain. Offshore wind energy is likely going to play a role in this transition. This must and can be done in a way that protects our precious environment.

Offshore wind development in Australia must be guided by independent, science-based research, inclusive engagement and robust governance to ensure sustainable and equitable outcomes for communities and marine life.

This report outlines the key environmental, social, economic, and cultural knowledge required to build a strong and independent evidence base, and how knowledge and data should be used to support decision-making.

We urge governments to get more involved in coordinating and directing priority research, so decisions are based on adequate information and communities can take part in a real and meaningful way.
