Cairns Screening of Corals’ Last Stand: The Fight to Save Scott Reef

Featuring AMCS Patron Tim Winton, Corals’ Last Stand tells the story of Scott Reef – its beauty, its importance, and the urgent campaign to protect it.

“This is a sentinel. This is a signal. If we lose Scott Reef, we lose all coral reefs.” – Tim Winton

Scott Reef is a remote coral atoll off the Kimberley coast of Western Australia, home to an incredible diversity of marine life – from pygmy blue whales, turtles  to vibrant coral gardens. But Woodside wants to drill for gas and dump carbon pollution under the ocean floor nearby, threatening this fragile ecosystem and contributing to climate change.

This screening is coming at a pivotal time in the campaign and will be followed by information on how to take action! For the first time in eight years, Australians have an opportunity to have their say on Woodside’s Browse gas proposal.

The Australian Government is now accepting public submissions before deciding whether to include Browse’s climate impacts on the Great Barrier Reef in its assessment of the proposal. What happens next could influence how one of Australia’s largest fossil fuel proposals is assessed.

What to expect

🎬 Community viewing of Corals’ Last Stand

🎙 Hear from AMCS Reef community campaigner, Tanya Murphy, about Woodside’s potential impacts not only Scott Reef, but the Great Barrier Reef through its lifetime emissions.

✊🏼 An invitation to take action: protect our reefs by making a submission to the Australian Government before public consultation closes on 21 July 2026.

Your presence matters

By joining this event and taking action you’re part of the growing call for the federal government to reject Woodside’s gas drilling and carbon dumping plans.

In a matter of days, thousands of people have already joined the action. We need thousands more to show Environment Minister Murray Watt that Australians won’t stand by while our reefs are pushed to the brink for fossil fuel profits.
