Through Juice, Winton once again confirms his place as a vital voice – not just in contemporary literature, but as an increasingly potent advocate for our environment.
Set in a bleak, post-climate collapse Western Australia, the deliberately pared-back prose paints a grim picture. Characteristically, Winton doesn’t hold back. He’s pointed the finger directly at the fossil corporations and laid the blame for this near-future catastrophe directly at their feet – and indirectly, at our complicity in sleepwalking towards its creation. Juice is big-picture, painted with relationships; between humans and the earth, between mother and son, between action (or in this case, inaction) and consequences.
If this sounds like a bit hard going—and it’s a rough trip for sure—it’s nonetheless a ripping yarn that hurtles you indelicately down a rutted, steep dirt track, with no safety net for the cliff at the end.
Strap in, watch out for the hairpin bends, and enjoy the ride.
