Australia is a global ‘lifeboat’ for some of the world’s most endangered sharks and rays.
Covering a total area larger than Iceland, 158 discrete areas of ocean habitat critical for the survival of sharks and rays have been identified across Australia and the Southeast Indian Ocean.
Important shark and ray areas (ISRAs) are a global initiative and scientific assessment to identify key habitats for sharks and rays that require protection.
ISRAs provide a clear picture of just how important Australian waters are for protecting some of the world’s most endangered sharks and rays.
Fin-ite time. This mapping enables governments to better protect threatened and endangered species before they disappear.

Protect our sharks and rays. Right now, Australian fisheries are driving five of our uniquely Aussie sharks and rays closer to extinction, and there are no specific protections in place for them.
