Call your MP to Save Scott Reef

This is one of the most powerful actions you can take to help save Scott Reef.

Calling your local Federal MP only takes two minutes, but it could make a real difference as the Australian Government considers this gas proposal.

Scott Reef is one of Australia’s most spectacular, biodiverse and vital coral reef ecosystems. It’s an ancient reef system that formed over the past 15 million years and rivals the World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef in the diversity of ocean wildlife it supports.

Scott Reef and its surrounding waters are home to more than 2,000 marine animal species, including endangered pygmy blue whales, green and hawksbill turtles, reef sharks, dolphins and Australia’s last remaining habitat for the endangered dusky sea snake.

It should be a safe place for marine life to thrive, not an industrial gas zone.
Fossil fuel giant Woodside wants to drill up to 50 gas wells near Scott Reef as part of its Browse gas proposal, plus up to seven additional wells to dump carbon pollution nearby.

If approved, the project would lock in decades of underwater seismic blasting and industrial activity, risking oil spills and the disturbance of vital green turtle nesting grounds.

Around 85% of the gas Woodside wants to drill around Scott Reef could be shipped overseas, leaving Australians to deal with the environmental risks.

The Federal Environment Minister will soon decide whether this proposal goes ahead. Before that decision is made, your local MP has an opportunity to speak up and help influence the outcome.

You live in a critical electorate for this fight to Save Scott Reef.

A phone call from a local voter is one of the most powerful ways to show politicians that Australians want to save Scott Reef.

It only takes two minutes.

We’ll help you find your MP, provide a simple script and guide you through the whole process.

Why your call matters

Right now, the future of Scott Reef is in the balance.

The Federal Environment Minister will soon decide whether to approve or reject Woodside’s Browse gas proposal.

Your local MP has an opportunity to speak up before that decision is made.

When local residents take the time to call, politicians notice. Every phone call shows that Australians expect Scott Reef to be saved, not put at risk by a new fossil fuel project.

Together, hundreds of individual calls can create the public pressure needed to save Scott Reef.

Before you call

Calling your MP is easier than you might think.

  • The call usually takes less than two minutes.
  • You’ll most likely speak with a staff member rather than your MP.
  • You don’t need to know every fact.
  • Simply explain why saving Scott Reef matters to you and ask that your message be passed on.

We’ll provide a suggested script to help you.

Suggested script

Hi, my name is [Name], and I’m a constituent from [Suburb].

I’m calling to ask you to urge the Albanese Government to reject Woodside’s Browse gas proposal and save Scott Reef.

Scott Reef is:

  • Ancient, over 15 million years old
  • Home to over 2,000 marine animal species, including turtles, blue whales and the dusky sea snake
  • So large it can be seen from space!

Scott Reef should be a safe place for marine life to thrive, not an industrial gas zone. Climate change is already one of the greatest threats facing coral reefs, and approving another major fossil fuel project would only make that threat worse.

Saving Scott Reef is important to me, and I’d really appreciate it if my views could be passed on to my MP.

Thank you for your time.

If they ask why

You don’t need to cover every point. Simply choose the ones that matter most to you.

  • The Albanese Government has the power to reject Woodside’s Browse gas proposal and save Scott Reef.
  • Climate change is one of the greatest threats facing our oceans. Approving another massive fossil fuel project would only make that threat worse.
  • This is about the kind of future we want to leave for our children and future generations. Once a place like Scott Reef is damaged, we can’t simply replace it.
  • Almost all (85%) of the gas Woodside wants to drill near Scott Reef would be shipped overseas, while Australians are left with the environmental risks.
  • Scott Reef is an ancient reef system formed over the past 15 million years. It is one of Australia’s most spectacular coral reef ecosystems and home to more than 2,000 marine animal species, including endangered turtles, pygmy blue whales and Australia’s last remaining habitat for the endangered dusky sea snake.
  • Scott Reef should be a safe place for marine life to thrive, not an industrial gas zone.

Our ask

Please ask your MP to:

  1. Urge the Albanese Government to reject Woodside’s Browse gas proposal.
  2. Publicly support saving Scott Reef.
  3. Put our oceans, wildlife and climate ahead of new fossil fuel expansion.
Frequently asked questions

Does one phone call really make a difference?

Yes. MPs pay attention to what their constituents contact them about. When many people call about the same issue, it sends a clear message that Australians want to save Scott Reef.

What if nobody answers?

Leave a voicemail if you can, then try again later. Every phone call counts.

What if I feel nervous?

That’s completely normal. Electorate offices receive calls from constituents every day. You don’t need to be an expert or read the script perfectly.

Will I speak directly to my MP?

It’s unlikely. Usually, you’ll speak with a staff member who will pass on your message.

Can I personalise my message?

Absolutely. Sharing why Scott Reef matters to you is often the most powerful part of the conversation. But please be respectful and use appropriate language.
