Save Scott Reef: Tell the government to assess Browse's impact on the Great Barrier Reef

Scott Reef is one of Australia’s most remarkable marine ecosystems.

Located off the coast of Western Australia, its coral reefs support pygmy blue whales, green sea turtles, dusky sea snakes, sharks, dolphins and countless other marine species. It is a place of extraordinary ecological value and one that deserves the strongest possible protection.

Woodside’s proposed Browse gas project would operate near Scott Reef and has long raised concerns about risks to this unique marine environment.

Now, for the first time in eight years, Australians have an opportunity to formally have their say on the proposal.
A new federal consultation process has opened after new peer-reviewed research introduced a methodology to assess the impacts Browse’s climate pollution could have on the Great Barrier Reef.

The Australian Government is now considering whether those climate impacts should be included in its assessment of the project.

Our submission calls on the Australian Government to include the Great Barrier Reef as a controlling provision in its assessment of Browse. This would allow the government to place conditions on the project to help protect the Reef, based on the project’s contribution to climate impacts. Browse is expected to produce more than 1.6 billion tonnes of climate pollution over its lifetime, contributing to ocean warming, marine heatwaves and coral bleaching that threaten reefs across Australia.

Add your name today and we’ll include it in the submission we lodge to the Australian Government.

The Department has confirmed that every signature will be considered an individual submission, helping demonstrate that Australians expect decisions about our oceans to be guided by science, transparency and the long-term protection of our reefs.

Join us in calling on the Federal Government to Save Scott Reef.
