Iconic Species Win
Iconic WA marine species promised their best chance to recover in more than a decade!
After close engagement with AMCS and in collaboration with UWA scientists, WA Fisheries Minister Jackie Jarvis has committed to major reforms to fisheries from the Kimberley to the south coast.
Reef fish like blue gropers and the endemic dhufish have been severely overfished throughout the region. In recent years, iconic dhufish populations have plummeted by 93% in waters off Perth.
The government has also closed the Pilbara Fish Trawl Fishery. The fishery has long impacted resident bottlenose dolphins and critically endangered green sawfish populations, with estimates of at least 16-33 dolphins killed annually.
This year will be the first in a long time where adult bottlenose dolphins of the region will be able to teach their young to hunt unimpeded by trawl boats.
With your support, we have secured longlasting refuge for these precious marine species, thank you!
