The Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) has welcomed the Queensland government’s announcement today of an online Climate Action Plan and the appointment of a Cabinet sub-committee, led by the Premier, to oversee the plan.
The online Climate Action Plan outlines existing targets, including a commitment to move to 50 per cent renewable energy by 2030 and reach zero-net emissions by 2050.
“This is a great opportunity for Queensland to lead the country towards becoming a renewable energy superpower and demonstrates the Queensland government’s new found momentum on climate action, which comes not a moment too soon,” said Jaimi Webster, AMCS Campaigner.
The future of our Great Barrier Reef and the communities which rely on it depends on bold action on climate change. Last Friday’s World Heritage Committee outcome requires the Australian government to take urgent action on climate and water pollution to protect the Great Barrier Reef. When it comes to the impact of global heating on our Reef, there is no time to lose.
“We acknowledge the substantial investment in renewable energy from the Queensland government and we continue to call for an all-of-government approach to global heating with a plan aligned with limiting warming to 1.5° Celsius, a crucial threshold for coral reefs,” Ms Webster said.
