Stop Adani Wrecking Our Reef

It’s the fight of our times – the fight to stop Adani’s massive coal mine wrecking our vibrant Great Barrier Reef. Hundreds of thousands are standing between Adani and our Reef. Will you be one of them?

Our Reef is part of Australia’s identity – a kaleidoscope of colour and life that all of us cherish and dream of seeing. But it is in peril.

Mining and burning coal creates carbon pollution, which heats our oceans. It is already leading to more catastrophic weather events and resulted in the most severe back to back coral bleaching we’ve ever seen in the Great Barrier Reef. Yet our government has given Adani’s colossal Carmichael coal mine many of the approvals it needs and continues to seek ways to subsidise the mine using taxpayer money.

If Adani’s mine goes ahead it will be one of the largest coal mines in the world and will generate an estimated 4.7 billion tonnes of carbon pollution over its lifetime. At a time when we need to be reducing our carbon pollution to save our Reef – this is reckless beyond belief.

The mine would drive massive industrial port expansion along the Reef coastline at Abbot Point. Over a million cubic metres of the seafloor would be dredged for a new coal terminal, threatening the habitat of vulnerable dugongs and turtles and dolphins. There would be hundreds more coal ships ploughing through the Reef’s waters every year, increasing the risk of accidents. Just one collision, one mistake or one spill could result in an environmental catastrophe in the Great Barrier Reef.

Adani can’t be trusted with our delicate Reef. We’ve seen the evidence, when Adani exceeded its permitted pollution discharge limit to the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area by more than 800 per cent at the Port of Abbot Point, and spilt coal laden water into the neighbouring fragile Caley Valley Wetlands, and onto the beach next to the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.

The Facts About Adani

Adani's corporate history is summarised in a report called The Adani Files. This report is based on the investigation of hundreds of court documents released by Environmental Justice Australia. It highlights The Adani Group’s long record of failing to comply with environmental law and reveals a catalogue of environmental catastrophes linked to the mining and energy giant – from a giant oil and coal spills, extensive mangrove destruction, to ocean pollution and tourism impacts.

Adani exceeded its pollution limit by 800% at its Abbot Point Coal Terminal during Cyclone Debbie in 2017 - releasing highly polluted, coal-laden water into the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area and nationally significant wetlands. This is further evidence the company cannot be trusted to protect our Great Barrier Reef, clean water and wildlife, leading Australian conservation groups have warned.

Adani's Carmichael coal mine proposes to open up the Galilee Basin and create the biggest coal mine in the Southern Hemisphere. This is dangerous - this coal mine will turbo-charge catastrophic climate change at a time when we urgently need to cut carbon pollution.

But there is a growing movement in Australia of ordinary people who want to #StopAdani and fast-track our country to renewable energy.

What is #StopAdani?

The #StopAdani Alliance is a growing network of 1.5 million people building the biggest movement in Australia’s history. The aim is to stop Adani’s Carmichael coal project and set Australia on a path beyond polluting energy towards a safer climate for all.

As part of the Stop Adani Alliance, what AMCS is asking for is simple:

  • Protect our Reef from Adani’s Carmichael Coal Mine and port expansion
  • Respect Indigenous rights
  • Revoke approvals for the Adani coal mine, rail and port project
  • End public subsidies for billionaire mining companies starting with Adani
  • Declare a ban on new thermal coal mines

It’s time to stop thinking small. Australia is the sunniest continent on earth, and one of the windiest. We can unleash our bountiful renewable resources and repower Australia with cleaner, cheaper energy.

Together – by building the biggest movement in Australia ever, stopping the money and shifting the politics – we will rise up to #StopAdani and save the Great Barrier Reef. Will you join us?
