Barron River and Cairns election candidates will reveal where they stand on key election issues like protecting our Great Barrier Reef and local livelihoods in a candidate forum organised by the Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) on Thursday 1 October.
The online event, which begins at 6pm, will give candidates from Labor, the Liberal National Party and the Greens the opportunity to share with voters their Reef-related policies on global warming and transitioning to renewable energy, water quality regulations and fishing. Coral reef scientist Professor Morgan Pratchett from James Cook University will also be on the panel.
AMCS reef campaigner Elise Springett said attendees will have the opportunity to submit a Reef-related question to the candidates when they register for the event.
“Our Reef is vital to our region and local livelihoods and we need politicians who will stand up for both in the next Queensland Parliament,” she said.
“Our community wants sustainable stimulus that creates jobs for our region, which will help and not harm our amazing Reef. We also want to see our water quality laws retained and more funding to help clean up the waters of the Reef. Queensland’s tourism industry, which supports tens of thousands of regional jobs, relies on clean water and a healthy Reef.
“We want to hear what the candidates have to offer our Reef and our community on these important issues.”
Attendees will have the chance to hear from Barron River MP Craig Crawford (Lab), Cairns MP Michael Healy (Lab), LNP Barron River candidate Linda Cooper, LNP Cairns candidate Sam Marino, Greens Barron River Candidate Aaron McDonald as well as Professor Pratchett.
