Australia is responsible for one of the world’s largest ocean estates, stretching from the Great Barrier Reef to Ningaloo, Scott Reef, and the Great Southern Reef.
Across these waters coral reefs, kelp forests, offshore canyons, seamounts and mangrove nurseries host extraordinary biodiversity that underpin fisheries, coastal livelihoods and global marine ecosystems. Yet these areas face escalating threats from climate change, industrial expansion, overfishing and pollution.
Highly protected marine sanctuaries in Commonwealth waters are a proven way to safeguard biodiversity, support species recovery, and strengthen resilience to climate change and ocean acidification. The upcoming federal review of Commonwealth marine parks, alongside Australia’s national commitment to protect 30% of our ocean by 2030, offers a rare and urgent opportunity to secure enduring protection for these irreplaceable marine ecosystems.
AMCS has a strong track record in navigating complex federal policy processes, co-leading an increase in highly protected marine areas from 4% to 24% of the national ocean estate. Yet key Commonwealth waters—including reefs, canyons and high-biodiversity seamounts—remain under-protected and vulnerable to industrial and climate pressures.
In 2026, we are raising funds to expand and strengthen highly protected marine sanctuaries in Commonwealth waters. By donating TODAY, your support will help to:

- Expand sanctuary zones and ensure effective management.
- Build public and political support for sanctuary expansion and ocean protection.

The projects featured in the Funding Prospectus are priority campaign activities and needs for which we are urgently seeking funds – current at the time of posting or going to press.
