A Global Plastics Treaty represents a once in a generation chance to stop rising plastic pollution, and secure enforceable global rules that address plastic across its full lifecycle. If done well, it could finally bend the curve on rising plastic pollution, setting the pathway to end the flow of plastic pollution into our ocean.
But strong outcomes are not guaranteed.
As negotiations approach their conclusion, powerful fossil fuel interests and a small group of low-ambition nations are working to dilute commitments, delay progress, and prioritise short-term profits over long-term planetary health. Without sustained public pressure and credible policy advocacy, this historic agreement risks being weakened at the final hour.
