The push for plastic packaging reduction.
Help hold Australia’s major supermarkets accountable for their plastic use and drive plastic packaging reduction.
Australia’s ocean should be a place where marine wildlife and coastal communities thrive, not choked by plastic. Yet every minute, an estimated 250 kilograms of plastic enters Australia’s environment, adding to a growing tide of pollution that is harming the species and ecosystems we cherish.
Nearly every marine species is impacted by plastic pollution – from turtles and seabirds to whales and dugongs. Entanglement, ingestion and toxic contamination are escalating, while microplastics and ghost gear degrade seagrass meadows, coral reefs and mangroves. Ecosystems critical for biodiversity, fisheries and carbon storage.
Without decisive intervention, the problem will escalate. Plastic production is rising globally, driven by major corporations, and plastic pollution in our ocean is projected to more than double by 2040. Concerningly, Australia remains one of the highest per-capita producers of plastic waste in the world, and shows no signs of slowing.
Your support can help change this trajectory.
AMCS is tackling plastic pollution at its source, driving down production, increasing corporate accountability, and accelerating systemic reform.
Australia’s major supermarkets sit at the frontline of our plastic packaging footprint. Through rigorous audits, secret shopper surveys and publicly released league tables, AMCS is exposing the $131 billion supermarket sector’s plastic use and lack of transparency, creating pressure for measurable reductions in disposable plastic packaging.
In 2026, we are seeking catalytic funding that will enable a step-change in this vital campaign. By donatingTODAY, you can help to:
- Drive measurable reductions in disposable plastic packaging on supermarket shelves.
- Deliver publicly released rankings on plastic use in the major supermarkets, driving competition and social license to do better.
- Secure stronger federal laws and design standards that hold corporations accountable.
- Increase uptake of reusable and refillable systems, supported by community demand and retailer commitments.
- Reduce plastic leakage into key marine ecosystems, as upstream controls take effect.
Strategic philanthropic investment now can stop plastic pollution before it reaches our ocean, protecting marine wildlife, supporting regional leadership, and safeguarding Australia’s seas for generations to come.
All donations over $2 are 100% tax-deductible. The projects featured in the Funding Prospectus are priority campaign activities and needs for which we are urgently seeking funds – current at the time of posting or going to press. As time progresses, there may be some cases in which the project you have selected may already be fully funded. In that instance, we would be delighted to discuss where the need is greatest at the given time. All of our campaigns work in symbiotic support of our mission to protect our oceans. Please be assured your gift will go to work to be the voice for Australia’s oceans, working on the big issues that risk our ocean wildlife.
