Decades of growing consumer demand, technological advancements, and industrial-scale fishing have led to unsustainable practices, depleting fish populations and threatening species through bycatch. Meanwhile, poor labelling and traceability, leaving us all uncertain about the sustainability of the seafood we are eating.
We can and we must do better.
Australians want sustainably sourced seafood, and we have the expertise to achieve it, yet, we continue to put ocean wildlife at risk. For instance, despite being listed for protection, deep-sea orange roughy are still targeted using gear that damages fragile ecosystems.
For 20 years, AMCS has spearheaded Australia’s sustainable seafood movement—empowering consumers, driving change, and advocating for better seafood standards and more sustainable fisheries. But we need to do more to address the systems that enable unsustainable fishing practices. This includes holding both government and industry accountable.
Your support helps AMCS expose harmful industrial fishing practices, prevent illegal and unregulated seafood from entering Australia, and drive legislative reforms. It also supports partnerships with local fishermen and seafood suppliers to promote sustainable practices.
