From the Great Barrier Reef to Ningaloo Reef, the Great Southern Reef, and our expansive northern coastline – Australia boasts some of the world’s most iconic, and ecologically and culturally important ecosystems on the planet.
However, these special places are under threat from multiple causes. Without action, the future of these special places hangs in the balance.
Extreme ocean temperatures, driven by fossil fuel emissions, are causing widespread coral bleaching and disrupting marine ecosystems. Despite this, Australia remains a major fossil fuel producer, contributing to the climate crisis.
These special places also face more localised threats. Water pollution reduces the ability of the Great Barrier Reef to recover from bleaching, and on-going land-clearing in catchments is making pollution worse. Unsustainable commercial fishing affects ecosystem health and resilience.
Australians and international supporters are uniting to protect these invaluable ecosystems. The next few years are critical. Governments must set ambitious emissions reduction targets and develop concrete plans to achieve them.
AMCS campaigns at all levels of government to secure funding and commitments to slash fossil fuel emissions, reduce pollution, establish conservation areas, and restore marine environments. Protecting these special places also means protecting the coastal communities that depend on them for jobs and livelihoods.
We will hold governments accountable and work to prevent harmful projects from going ahead, ensuring the voices of communities passionate about protecting Australia’s oceans are heard.
