Australia’s oceans host an incredible diversity of life, stretching from our sub-Antarctic territories to our tropical coasts.
They are home to over 33,000 marine species, diverse habitats, and unique coastal communities, many of which exist nowhere else on Earth. These waters are essential for the survival of countless species, including ours. But despite overwhelming scientific evidence urging immediate action, ecosystems are crumbling and marine wildlife is edging closer to extinction.
In recent decades, the relentless pursuit of profits and the exploitation of the ocean as a resource has driven species into decline and pushed many to the brink of extinction. The systems meant to protect them are broken. Weak and outdated national nature laws and fragmented regulation across federal, state and local levels result in inconsistent enforcement and decisions favouring industries over nature protection and restoration.
Without urgent action, we risk witnessing the permanent loss of marine species on our watch – a legacy we cannot afford to leave behind.
