Clean up on Aisle 9

Pull the plug on plastic profiteering!

Help hold Australia’s major supermarkets accountable for their plastic use and drive plastic packaging reduction.

Ocean plastic pollution is a major threat to marine life, tourism, and fisheries. Nearly every species in the ocean has encountered plastic. Cleanup data reveals that 69% of plastic found in the environment consists of soft plastics, food packaging, and beverage litter.

Supermarkets are at the frontline of plastic waste. This project will tackle the issue at its source by pressuring supermarkets to take responsibility for the pollution they create. It’s time for them to lead the charge on eliminating single-use plastics and shifting to sustainable alternatives like reusable and refillable options.

We’re holding Australia’s big four supermarkets accountable by collecting data on their sustainability practices, conducting secret shopper surveys, and publishing league tables to empower consumers to vote with their wallets. Our advocacy also pushes for stronger federal plastics policies, demanding transparency and action from supermarkets, who are well-positioned to reduce plastic packaging.

Thanks to our supporters, our 2023-2025 supermarket plastics pilot project has exposed a significant lack of transparency in the $131 billion industry. The second audit report was released in November 2024 and found that supermarkets are charging customers more to avoid plastic packaging.

With $99,500 already committed, we are seeking $180,324 to fund this final third year of the pilot project. Your support will help us:

All donations over $2 are 100% tax-deductible. The projects featured in the Funding Prospectus are priority campaign activities and needs for which we are urgently seeking funds – current at the time of posting or going to press. As time progresses, there may be some cases in which the project you have selected may already be fully funded. In that instance, we would be delighted to discuss where the need is greatest at the given time. All of our campaigns work in symbiotic support of our mission to protect our oceans. Please be assured your gift will go to work to be the voice for Australia’s oceans, working on the big issues that risk our ocean wildlife.
