In lieu of Sarah & Sebastian Secret Santa gifts this year, please make a donation to help us reach $2,000 in support of the Australian Marine Conservation Society’s work to save Australian sea lions.
The Australian sea lion is now one of the rarest sea lion species on the planet, with only 6,500 mature sea lions estimated in the wild.
They are at such low levels, that in 2021 the conservation status of the species was re-assessed to ‘endangered’ under Australian law. With a number of threats to the species, including bycatch, debris entanglement, pollution and rising sea levels, our Australian sea lion urgently needs a rescue plan.
To help protect our precious sea lions, here’s a snapshot of what we need to achieve next:
- Cameras on all fishing vessels that fish near Australian sea lion colonies, to ensure all sea lion deaths are recorded accurately
- A strategy in place in Western Australia to close areas to commercial fishing if sea lions are being caught in commercial fishing nets
- Investment in research to accurately record how many sea lions we have so we can track the species recovery, or identify if numbers are dropping
- The Australian Government must reduce emissions from fossil fuels and support a transition to renewable energy solutions.
