Australia’s plastic addiction is beyond a joke. The future of our oceans and planet depends on the choices we make today.
With the collapse of REDcycle and more than 145,000 tonnes of plastic pouring into our environment annually, it’s clear that Australia needs to reduce plastic packaging.
After years of missed recycling targets, environment ministers agreed to reform plastic packaging regulation—an opportunity for transformative change that could reduce plastic waste – if it’s done right.
We have a narrow window to influence plastic packaging rules and push for effective global regulations, based on international best practices.
Following successes with plastic bans, we’re focussed on securing laws that hold companies accountable for their packaging choices, and for mandatory national targets for reduction and reuse of plastic packaging.
To influence the proposed laws, we must rapidly scale up public engagement and media pressure. Once in place, we must ensure rules are enforced to stop companies pumping out unnecessary plastic packaging, and stop plastic pollution at the source.
We need to raise $167,500 in 2025 to double down on our recent successes, positively engage with retailers and government, and deliver plastic packaging reforms to protect our ocean life. By donating TODAY you can help:
- Commission policy analysis on regulatory tools to reduce total plastic consumption, prioritising items that pose the greatest threat to ocean ecosystems.
- Undertake public polling and nationwide campaign to demonstrate support for new rules that cut needless plastic packaging.
- Secure mandatory product design standards, plastic reduction targets, quotas for increasing reuse systems, and an eco-modulated packaging levy to incentivise adoption of sustainable alternatives.
