Trinity Inlet Proposal

A proposal to increase the shipping lanes at Trinity Inlet, Cairns for larger cruise ships was to require over 4 million cubic metres of dredging with plans to dump the dredge spoil in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park or nearby wetlands. In response AMCS and WWF Australia commissioned a report into the opportunities and risks to better understand the options.

The report identified that Cairns could still benefit from cruise shipping without the dredging and that the overall economic benefits to the local economy from cruise shipping were likely exaggerated.
