Cairns Reef Climate Leaders Training

You’re invited to Reef Climate Leaders Training with the Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) in Cairns.

Feeling the impacts of the climate crisis after the summer of extreme bushfires and floods? Worried about the future of the Great Barrier Reef and our community with coral bleaching and cyclones?

Join likeminded people to learn how to take action on climate change to protect our Reef and our future.

The program

This one-day volunteer leadership program will teach you skills in creating change, community organising and communication. Feel empowered to create change through interactive workshops, connect with like-minded people over free morning tea and lunch, and learn new persuasive conversation skills.

All levels of experience are catered for. First-time participants will receive all the information you need to feel confident in talking about the biggest threat to our Reef: climate change. More experienced volunteers will learn new skills and help guide the next phase of our community campaign as we reach out to local networks as part of our new Reef Coast Climate Declaration.

The context

There has never been a more important time to fight for our Reef. Our Reef is facing many threats but if we don’t limit global heating and keep fossil fuels like Adani’s coal in the ground, this will fuel more destructive coral bleaching and mortality.

In 2018 and 2019 over 150 local businesses – led by Reef tourism operators – signed onto a Declaration calling on the federal government to rapidly phase out coal and transition to renewable energy. Now we’re building the momentum by engaging potentially unlikely allies in other industries, community groups and individuals to take action.

With your help, we can give our beautiful Reef and our community the best chance for the future.

We will provide all your training materials, snacks and lunch.
