Climate impacts risk Reef World Heritage listing - Australian government must act

Last year UNESCO recommended that the Reef be added to the list of World Heritage ‘in Danger’, due to the threat of climate change and water pollution.

The In Danger listing will be decided at the next World Heritage Committee meeting, which has been indefinitely postponed due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The Australian government must use this time to take strong climate action for our Reef.

The World Heritage Committee requested a joint UNESCO and IUCN Reactive Monitoring Mission (RMM) to the Reef to assessAustralia’s protection of the Reef.

The RMM occurred in March, during the fourth mass bleaching event since 2016.

Join us to urge the Australian government to take bold action on climate change and Reef water pollution.

If the Reef is listed as In Danger Australia will be supported to undertake a series of “corrective measures” to address the threats to the Reef.

The Australian government must take serious and rapid action on climate change by transitioning from fossil fuels to clean energy, investing in pollution reduction, and accelerating action at all levels.

The Government needs to commit to a 1.5°C compatible pathway to secure the future of our beautiful and iconic Reef.
