Seafood Summit 2010: AMCS heads to peak meeting |
|
Globally, fish stocks are in trouble. But it is not too late to avoid the 'end of the line' for our fisheries, and everyone can be part of the solution.
It's widely accepted that sustainable fisheries are good for the marine environment, good for the future of the fishing industry, good for consumers and for society as a whole. But we have still some way to go, and fisheries management and seafood suppliers need some encouragement to catch up with the consensus.
That's where you and I come in. Consumer demand for sustainable fish products at the supermarkets, fish markets and seafood restaurants can and does have the power to shape the future of fish stocks and the oceans as a whole. |
 |
It's also where the annual
Seafood Summit comes in. Now in its 8th year, this international meeting of leaders from the seafood industry, Government, fisheries science and the conservation sector has become central to
driving the sustainable seafood debate world wide.
AMCS is attending the
Seafood Summit
2010
:
Challenging Assumptions in a Changing World
. As leading advocates for sustainable seafood in Australia, we have never held back from challenging assumptions about the sustainability of wild and farmed fish and never been backward in stepping forward to speak up for the future of our oceans.
AMCS publishes
Australia's Sustainable Seafood Guide - the only consumer guide to the sustainability of farmed and wild seafood in
Australia. The
Guide was produced in response to rising public demand for independent information on how consumers can choose seafood wisely and avoid seafood that is either overfished or whose method of capture damages marine habitats and species.
AMCS is proud to attend and grateful to have received fellowship sponsorship from
Seafood Choices Alliance, the organisers of the summit.
Seafood Summit 2010 takes place in
Paris 30 January - 2 February.
Our Director will be reporting back from the Summit daily. Read Darren's updates here.
