The Story Behind the Guide |
Most Australians love the sea with all of their heart. Most of us know that our oceans are overfished, but few of us know just how much deep trouble our blue planet is in.
For over a century we have allowed trawling, long-lining, gillnetting, seine netting, trapping, line fishing and other types of fishing to exploit Australia's relatively small fisheries and supply other countries with seafood.
Along with the rest of our blue planet, a legacy of fishing impacts is beginning to unfold in Australia. Increasingly we are realizing that our children will bare the cost of overfishing if we don't turn things around. |
Australia's Sustainable Seafood Guide was developed in response to a public need. More and more people were coming to us and asking how they could reconcile their love of oceans with their desire for seafood.
We saw the need for an independent guide on how consumers can choose seafood wisely and avoid seafood that is either overfished or whose method of capture damages the sea and its ecosystems. |
 |
Our sustainable seafood campaign is about creating social change. Our goal is to make our fisheries sustainable.
By empowering everyday Australians to take action, we can make changes in our daily lives and affect changes in those around us.
As informed seafood shoppers we Australians can direct what seafood is caught, how it is caught or farmed and determine where it comes from. Through our purchasing power and questioning at the seafood counter, we can contribute to building a more sustainable seafood future for Australia and ensure that our oceans remain resilient and healthy for future generations.
We encourage you to read Australia's Sustainable Seafood Guide carefully. Discuss it with friends. Keep it with you and use it to help you make more informed and sustainable seafood choices. |
